For foreigners, residence is governed by Zákon č. 404/2011 Z.z. (Residence of Aliens Act) and handled by the Foreign Police (Cudzinecká polícia), not the municipal ohlasovňa (which serves Slovak citizens). EU/EEA citizens who stay longer than 90 days must register their residence with the Foreign Police within 30 days of that 90-day point; the resulting potvrdenie o pobyte EÚ (EU residence confirmation) is then used to access most services. Non-EU citizens also register through the Foreign Police at minv.sk. Temporary residence (prechodný pobyt) is issued by purpose and can run up to 5 years.

If you are permanently relocating to Slovakia (not just visiting), EU regulation EC 1186/2009 allows you to import personal belongings and one vehicle duty-free, provided: the goods were used by you for at least 6 months before the move, you owned them for at least 12 months, and you apply within 12 months of establishing residence. Your driving licence is exchangeable at Dopravný inšpektorát. Non-EU licences can be exchanged from 185 days after your residence registration opens (you then have 60 days to complete the exchange).

After 90 days of stay: EU/EEA citizens have 30 days to register residence with the Foreign Police; non-EU citizens must hold a valid prechodný pobyt before their visa/visa-free stay expires. Within 30 days of establishing residence: Register an imported vehicle. After 90 days with a dog: Register your dog at the municipality within 30 days (zákon č. 282/2002).
