Our story
My husband arrived in Slovakia as an expat, and I, a Slovak, became his guide to everything: the bureaucracy, the healthcare system, the tradespeople, the banks. I spoke the language, I knew the system. And yet even with all that, there were moments where we were genuinely stuck.
Finding a doctor who could explain a diagnosis in English. A lawyer who understood international situations and didn't just shrug. A plumber who could actually discuss what needed fixing without us standing there with a phone translation app between us. These things sound small, until they're not.

That frustration, felt from the inside, as a Slovak, is what pushed me to build ExpatBase. Not just a list of businesses, but a properly curated directory of professionals who can actually help the international community in Bratislava. People who speak English (or other languages), understand expat situations, and are used to working with clients from all over the world.
Why this matters
Slovakia is a wonderful place to live. Bratislava is vibrant, central in Europe, relatively affordable, and genuinely welcoming. But the infrastructure for internationals has always lagged behind. Expat Facebook groups are full of the same desperate questions: "Does anyone know a good English-speaking doctor?" "Can anyone recommend a lawyer who actually speaks English?"
Those questions shouldn't be so hard to answer. That's the gap ExpatBase is here to fill.
What ExpatBase is (and isn't)
ExpatBase is a curated directory, not an automated listing site. We don't scrape the internet and bulk-import every business in Bratislava. Every listing is either submitted by the business itself or researched by us, and we focus specifically on providers who have experience working with the English-speaking international community.
This site is also for expat partners and families, not just the expats themselves. If you're a Slovak married to someone who doesn't speak the language, or a parent trying to find an English-friendly school or paediatrician for your kids, this is for you too. Trust me, I know that side of the situation.
